IF IT ALL CAME APART
One day the boats were all unmoored
and pulled into the sea
They drifted till, by storms and time,
they sunk mercilessly
One day the planes, those mighty bulks
refused to lift and fly
No longer would they leave the ground
and gravity defy
One day the homes were all destroyed
to twisters, quakes - the like.
Flattened, scattered; every wall
each bridge and every dyke
Us humans left within the ruin
surprised to be alive,
cursed and thanked the brutal earth,
and learned how to survive
Like refugees luxated from
the normal we had known
Our past was antiquated to
the wild, raw alone
I could find another side of you
To have, my dear, and hold
Not a changeling but a change
From dross we’ll mine the gold
The stillness when the cities fell
felt vast as all of space
We had to fit ourselves anew
within this earthen place
I could lose you in the static
Or the silence in between
Hold on to the frequency
Of each other being seen
One day the roads were overgrown
Till the ones which marked our way
Were the trails of the animals
Through grass and sand and clay.
